This $8.0 million Community Center in the
South Bronx was formerly known as "Fort Apache". The
2nd floor lounge is in a red drum that cantilevers
over the exterior amphitheater, then cuts through the curtain
wall and becomes a curved interior wall visible from all three
stories. Outside is an amphitheater. Upon entry is a 3-story
atrium over which many of the communal spaces overlook. Rooms
include a full size gymnasium/auditorium with stage, a fitness
room, a woodworking room, an arts & crafts room, a ceramics
room, a boxing room, counseling rooms, lounge, cafeteria, classrooms,
educational resource center and outdoor terrace that works with
the Bronx Botanical Garden to provide botany experiments in
a safe outside area.
