Mesa State University - Campbell College Center
Grand Junction , CO
Overview: This 100,000 sf College Center was designed in record time, having replaced the existing Center that was demolished, leaving the campus without its critical central building. In addition, the project included a 300-car garage that was constructed in 4 months.
The surprisingly mild microclimate in Grand Junction , Colorado provided challenges and opportunities that were manifested in the transparency of the design. The campus has a tradition of outdoor activities throughout the year and the building reflects this by providing plazas and multiple terraces that relate to the various points of entry that draw students from multiple directions.
The facility includes a significant component devoted to a grand divisible Multi-Purpose Room that functions with peripheral Meeting Rooms and Food Services that serve both the campus and numerous outside local organizations. The building is designed to provide the largest gathering space [for 700+ occupants] in the region while at the same time serving the college community.
The Bookstore occupies the grade level of the new Garage and this is representative of the architects' awareness of the importance to activate the entire ground level with student-focused services. The extensive use of local stone on the Garage and the building façade enhances the desire to showcase the Mesa for students and visitors.
